Comprehensive Dentistry
Comprehensive Dentistry in Minneapolis
Perhaps you have experienced it: "One tooth dentistry". One tooth dentistry is where you show up at the dentist's office, you don't know what will be done exactly, or why for that matter. You just shows up, some work is done, and you move on to the next appointment.
Comprehensive dentisty is just the opposite of "one tooth dentistry".
Comprehensive dentisty is what we practice here.
Patient knowledge
In our office the patient always knows the current state of his or her oral health. The patient always knows what will be done by the dentist on that day's visit, why it is being done, how it was prioritized, and how it fits into the big picture.
How we accomplish this
Just as the name implies, comprehensive dentistry takes into account everything concerning the patient's mouth. It is a comprehensive or total understanding of the patient's oral health and condition by both the patient and the dentist. Consequently, any dental problems and concerns such as decay and gum disease are noted, as well as irregularities in the mouth such as clenching and grinding of the teeth.
But it is important not to stop there. The dentist may also ask the patient what their aspirations are for how their mouth looks and works. Maybe there is staining on the teeth that the patient would like to do something about, but never mentioned by the dentist before. Or, perhaps there is a crooked tooth or a space between the teeth that the patient would rather not have.
Filling in the "big picture"
All problems, concerns and aspirations are noted by the dentist in a complete picture and understanding of the patient's oral condition. This comprehensive picture — the big picture — is then put into a plan of how to treat the patient, and this plan is called the treatment plan.
At our clinic
"At our clinic, we practice comprehensive dentistry and treatment planning. You will always know what we are doing, why we are doing it, and how it fits into the big, comprehensive picture of what we are trying to achieve. We also offer many different procedures, and we make great effort to inform our patients about these procedures, what they are, and what alternatives exist as well. In the end, our patients understand where they were when they started their care, where they are now, and have been completely involved in the decision making."
