Gum Disease

Gum Disease As Seen in Our Dental Office in Minneapolis

Our gums can have disease too

Our teeth are supported by bone and soft tissues. These tissues are subject to disease, which we commonly call gum disease, and which is clinically called peridontal disease.

Gum disease can be controlled

Silent and painless

Gum disease is silent and painless. Many people have gum disease, but because it is silent and painless, they are unaware of its presence. This is why regular cleaning, checkups and examinations are so important. Once gum disease takes hold, it is important to eliminated its causes as soon as possible.

Health benefits of hygiene

Eliminating the sources of gum disease directly benefits the overall health of patients, even patients with more advanced cases of the disease. This is because any infection — and gum disease is no exception — causes the body to fight the infection with its immune system's resources. When the infection is removed or reduced, the body's immune system is similarly relieved.

Bad breath

Gum disease is very often accompanied by persistent bad breath. Eliminating the source of gum disease can also eliminate or greatly reduce bad breath. This is accomplished with deep cleaning followed up with regular cleaning on a rigidly scheduled basis.

Other signs of gum disease

There are some obvious signs that a patient can notice that might indicate a presence of gum disease. One might have gum disease if the gums are:

  • Bleeding
  • Tender
  • Swollen
  • Red
