Sealants
Sealants For Adults As Well As Children in Minneapolis
Protection from decay
Sealants are a surface covering, plastic material the hygienist places over the top of the tooth. This plastic sealant fills in the gaps on the surface where brushing may not reach. Because the gaps are filled in, bacteria and plague are kept away from the enamel, and as a consequence, decay cannot take hold on the treated surface.
Sealants for children
Children are at risk of decay from an early age. By applying sealants early, their teeth are protected from the less rigorous and more fickel brushing of a child.
Sealants for adults
Adults can definitely benefit from sealants. The less accessible teeth in the back of the mouth (the molars and the immediately adjacent teeth) are especially good candidates for sealants on adults.
How long do they last?
Sealants will last for years. When they do begin to thin too much to protect the teeth, a simple re-application can be made to again protect the teeth over an equally long period of time.
